O Central Park é uma unidade de conservação do sistema de parques dos Estados Unidos, localizado no centro da cidade de Nova York, com formato retangular com 341 hectares.

Sem dúvida é um dos parques urbanos mais famosos do mundo, o que não é para menos, pois além de estar no centro da capital do mundo, como é conhecida Nova York, reserva uma amostra da área natural da região, e possui muitos atrativos de entretenimento para os freqüentadores, entre eles as belíssimas paisagens, fornecendo elementos para a contemplação.

Já tivemos a oportunidade de visitá-lo algumas vezes e, realmente, é um local de grande beleza cênica onde o interessado pode passar horas.

Em especial nos dias 09 e 13 de maio de 2011, visitamos o Central Park com o objetivo específico de observar a sua fauna nativa, notadamente suas aves.

Os dias estavam ensolarados e, por ser primavera, especial para a observação das aves. Foi muito interessante e deu para se ter uma idéia de sua avifauna. Tivemos a oportunidade de observar várias espécies, nas poucas horas de nossa estada, cuja lista segue a final.

Segundo as informações na internet (http://www.birdsofcentralpark.com/ e www.centralpark.com ) e em alguns folhetos de divulgação ocorrem mais de 200 espécies de aves no parque. Um número muito significativo, em se tratando de uma área urbana de uma mega-metrópole.

O parque possui uma grande variedade de ambientes como, jardins, lagos e áreas de matas naturais, de forma que sua avifauna compreende aves aquáticas, florestais. Umas das áreas naturais principais é “The Ramble”, que é um local mais ermo de mata natural com trilhas, freqüentado por milhares de birdwatchers por ano, que observam e contam as espécies que vêem. O mais interessante, trocam informações via internet formando uma rede de informações e dados sobre a avifauna local, propiciando um senso mais exato das espécies que habitam o famoso parque. Existe até uma associação de observadores de aves do Central Park. Uma das espécies nativas mais comum é o Turdus migratorius, que além de enfeitar tem um bonito canto.

Apesar de todos estas variedades de ambiente, o local mais indicado e visitado pelos birdwatrchers é o citado The Ramble, próximo ao principal complexo de restaurantes e serviços, com muitas trilhas e de fácil acesso.

Devido ao enorme tamanho do Central Park o visitante que quiser conhecê-lo, ou percorrê-lo todo deve dispor de um dia inteiro pelo menos, mas o recomendado é reservar dois dias para visitá-lo.

Não podemos deixar de dizer que o American Museu of Natural History fica vizinho ao parque além de outros não menos famosos museus, o que torna a região o maior atrativo de NY.
