ECOLOGICAL SANCTUARIES
Nhecolândia- MS/ Brazil

Characteristics:
Pantanal is an enormous plain with around 140 hundred square km, located in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul States, going up to Paraguay. It is located in the Paraguay River hydrographical basin.
It is considered one of the biggest ecological sanctuaries in the world, because for its characteristics, has an abundant animal concentration, being also a Natural Reserve of great scenic beauty.
Paraguay River has as main affluent Cuiabá River, São lourenço River, Miranda River, Taquari River and Aquidauana River, but there are plenty of another rivers.
The pantaneira plain has as borders Chapada dos Parecis, Planalto de Maracaju and Serra do Tapirapuã.
It is used to divide the Pantanal plain in 10 sub-regions:
1. Cáceres - 11,9%
2. Barão de Melgaço - 13,3%
3. Paraguai - 5,3%
4. Paiguás - 18,3%
5. Poconé - 12,9%
6. Nabileque - 9,4%
7. Abobral - 1,6%
8. Miranda - 4,6%
9. Aquidauana - 4,9%
10. Nhecolândia - 17,8%
Nhecolândia region is practically at Pantanal center, and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful pantaneira sub-region, because it suffers big influence of the floods, forming big lakes, that are known as salines, where water gets saline, providing special habitat for a lot of birds species.Fauna:
Pantanal’s fauna is one of the richest faunas in the world, having more than 650 birds species, mainly Jabiru micteria, Chauna torquata, Ramphastos toco, Mycteria americana Anodorhyncus hyscinthinus and Ara chloroptera.
Among mammals, special distinction for Phantera onca and Felix concolor.
Capybaras (Hydrochoeru hydrocoeris), that are the biggest rodents of the world are in all the region and easily can be seen.
Among mammals there can be also seen Alouatta caraya, Cebus sp, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Tamandua tetradactyla, Pteronura brasiliensis.
In a mammals rising in the Nhecolândia region, specialists observed the presence of 34 mammals species (ALHO & LACHER Jr., 1988).
We have to give special emphasis for the fishes in the region also, distincting: Salminus maxillosus, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Paulicea lutkeni, Colossoma mitrei, Serrassalmus nattereri.Vegetation
The region’s vegetation is composed by a big species diversity, distinction for: Tabebuia áurea, Tecoma sp, Voschysia sessilifolia, Cecropia sp, Genipa americana, Triplaris formicosa, Inga sp, Ficus sp, Attalea princips, Mauritia vinifera etc.
Our trips
We have been in the region of Nhecolândia (Antonio Silveira et all) for some days in July 1989 and 1990, where we have done some fauna and flora observation, collecting big quantity of photographical, recording and sounds material.Consulted Bibliography
