"In the Muriqui ways" (São Francisco Xavier- SP)

    

 

        In the period from March 15th to 17th, in 2002, the NOG was in one more ecological activity.

        This time it was in São Francisco Xavier, at Serra da Mantiqueira, in São Paulo, in the event that was called "In the Muriqui Ways", which main objective was observing the Brachyteles arachnoides (Muriqui), the biggest primate of the New World, which is highly threatened of extinction in its natural habitat.

        The group composed by 37 people was at the Muriqui Inn (http://pousadamuriqui.vila.bol.com.br), from where two observing expeditions started, with destination to the Forestall Reserve of the Mandala Farm, which owner, Walter Cerigatto Costa, has made it available for the Environmental Program.

        The Mandala Farm is at Serra da Mantiqueira and has about 350 ha of forested area, including primary and secondary wood in advanced stage.

        The walks happened at the 16th (Saturday), from 8 to 12 and at the 17th (Sunday), from 7:45 to 12:30. In this last one the group could observe a band of muriquis, taking pictures and recording them.
        There was also seen at the Mandala Farm, by Antonio Silveira, a big number of animals threatened by extinction, as Pulsatrix perspicillata * and Brachycephalus ephippium * motivating also
motivating also the observing works continuation for eventual suggestions for preservation acts, in collaboration to the farm (* photos: Juarez Silva).

        The event also showed to the local commerce that a natural area, having animals in extinction, represents an important economic potential for the community and that must be developed projects and/ or programs of sustainable development, mainly about ecotourism, including effective actions of natural environmental protection.

        The group was formed by people from a big profession variety that were together to a common objective of ecological aspect, showing that events like this can be successful and bring bigger conscious about environmental question and consequently protecting fauna and flora. There were also funny time, including the waterfalls showers.

        The Environmental Program: The Last Noah's Ark thanks in its name and in the name of all those whom have participated from the event to Walter, collaborating with the opening of the Mandala Farm for the realized activities.
